Sooo I haven’t seen this movie but…tonight at work, this big group of high schoolers came in that were clearly part of the after-church-youth-group crowd we get a lot at my yogurt shop on Sunday nights. And a group of them started talking about this movie. I was wiping down chairs because we were about to close in about a half hour, and I overhear the following:

Girl: “So this one character is flirting with this guy the whole movie, and she asks him out at the end, and he says that he’s gay. What a great thing to have in a movie for kids, right? I mean, it’s a family movie.”

I wanted to say something SO badly, to the effect of “WTF, gay people exist, you homophobic religious nut”, but managed to slip into the back of the store and calm down. The sad thing is, I remember how everyone around me when I was still in the church environment used to have attitudes like this. They acted like it was a personal affront to even acknowledge that some people were gay, like doing so would infect their children’s minds and they might, I don’t know, *not* grow up to be insanely judgmental? Anyway. Just a bit of gif-relevant ranting. Not like there’s anything to be done about it, except hope that with each generation, the amount of people brainwashed into acting like this becomes smaller.

If you haven’t watched this yet, you really should.

This is a must, girls and boys.

I agree that everyone should watch this. This is one of the few videos on female representation in the media that at least tries to point out that the way females are represented has a negative effect on everyone, not just women.

I love that this`touches also on how media affects men, but wow. Stereotypes are perpetuated by television more than in reality, and they are so skewed because they have to be provocative or funny or any number of things that aren’t complete or real enough.

This affects not only women and men, but race, gays and lesbians, trans people, all people.

We all struggle against what we are supposed to be, what we are told we should be, and yet when positions in media and PR change, the image doesn’t. Because people get those positions by conforming to that image, and breaking out risks loss.

This is why it is so hard for anyone to be who they really are, because they are so busy being what other’s expect so as not to be harassed for not being what they are supposed to be.

Oh man, Geena Davis. I love her with all -y heart.

Everyone needs to watch this and see how harmful misrepresentation and perpetuating harmful stereotypes are not just to a minority group, but to everyone.

Only by adapting a new way of thinking, by treating everyone equally, and even eroding gender roles, can we influence our peers and perpetuate something good.

This is indeed an important message, and well done. Worth a watch, it’s like 9 minutes long.

Iggy Pop is such a bad ass. There’s an interview I watched where his manager talked about having to bail him out of jail. The manager shows up and Iggy is drunk, disorderly, and wearing a dress. His manager asked “Ig, why are you wearing a womans dress?” and Iggy replied “I beg to differ, this is a mans dress.”

It’s like Eddie Izzard says - ‘They’re not women’s clothes. They’re my clothes. I bought them.’

Have never understood why we are so hung-up on certain ways of draping fabric over someone’s body being exclusively…well, I’d say masculine or feminine, but let’s face it, it’s pretty much only “girl’s” clothes that aren’t tolerated on men.

It’s just fabric, guys. Who cares if they encase someone’s legs or let them breathe? Who cares if it’s cut in a deep V on the chest or goes all the way up to their neck? Who cares if it’s blue, pink, black, purple, polka-dotted, flower-printed… IT’S JUST CLOTHING.

A few months ago I was working at Costco and this guy selling barbecues near me was snickering while looking at his phone and wanted to show me this “guy wearing a skirt” that he took a picture of. Now, even if said skirt had been bright pink with lacy ruffles, my reaction would have been “who gives a fuck.”

…The guy was wearing a kilt. That’s…that’s not even traditionally female clothing. Yet this American guy still found it hilarious. :| We need to collectively get over it, it’s juvenile and asinine.

Why is Pepper Ann such a great show? Well, let’s start off with the main character. She’s pizza-eating, tv-watching, comic book-reading, hard rock-loving kind of girl who loves to rollerblade. She’s great at soccer, average in school and worries a lot about being cool. What’s interesting about Pepper Ann is that she’s definitely the most aggressive character in the show, and is never penalized for that. Her lack of feminine passivity is always shown to be a good thing. In fact, the entire show is full of strong-willed females who respect and accept themselves for who they are. Like her single, feminist mom, Lydia Pearson, who supports her family and encourages her daughters to be independent and to believe in themselves. Her younger sister, Moose, looks and sounds like a boy, yet this is never commented on in the show. Moose just is who she is, and nobody cares that she doesn’t fit in to the typical female role. One of Pepper Ann’s best friends, Milo, is a sensitive artist and in one episode he comes to the conclusion that there is no typical way to be a guy. The main females characters of the show rarely worry about their physical appearance and Pepper Ann often learns that traits like honesty and integrity are more important than being cool. When it comes down to it, this show is amazing because it sends the right message about girls and women. The show is centred on strong female characters, and portrays a world where gender really doesn’t matter.

Some of this is oversimplified and silly (I think dogs can be pretty damn smart, actually), but I like the excitement graph and the jealousy demonstration. I remember when I had my two dogs Rosie and Zoe, if you called for Rosie you’d have Zoe *sprinting* across the house to get there first. Cause whatever Rosie was getting, Zoe wanted to take it from her, even if she wouldn’t want it in the first place.

for those not in the know, night witches were russian lady bombers who bombed the shit out of german lines in WW2. Thing is though, they had the oldest, noisiest, crappest planes in the entire world. The engines used to conk out halfway through their missions, so they had to climb out on the wings mid flight to restart the props. the planes were also so noisy that to stop germans from hearing them combing and starting up their anti aircraft guns, they’d climb up to a certain height, coast down to german positions, drop their bombs, restart their engines in midair, and get the fuck out of dodge.

their leader flew over 200 missions and was never captured.
